Habits and Characteristics

Scallops are widely distributed across oceans around the world and can be found along the coastal areas of both northern and southern China. They typically inhabit shallow waters from the subtidal zone to depths of about 100 meters. Skilled swimmers, they use the opening and closing of their shells via the adductor muscle to move up, down, left, and right in a butterfly-like motion.

As filter feeders, they passively consume plankton, bacteria, and organic debris. Their gonads usually mature between May and October. Scallops can be either dioecious (having separate sexes) or hermaphroditic. In dioecious species, sperm and eggs are released into the seawater for fertilization and development, while hermaphroditic individuals typically release sperm first, followed by eggs.

Main Value

Scallops are rich in high-quality protein, low in fat, and contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are highly beneficial for human health-helping to reduce blood lipids and soften blood vessels.

The meat of scallops is delicious and nutritious, with a plump adductor muscle. When processed and dried, it is known as "dried scallop" or "conpoy," a prized seafood delicacy. Their shells are beautiful and colorful, making them suitable for decoration or as raw materials for carving crafts. Some species have also become important subjects for pharmaceutical research and development.

Main Varieties

  • Chlamys farreri (Zhikong Scallop): The type locality is in China. This species grows quickly, has delicious meat, and is highly nutritious. Its dried product, conpoy, is a valuable seafood treasure. In the northern coastal regions of China, it is abundant and yields high harvests, making it a key species for aquaculture and fishing.
  • Argopecten irradians (Bay Scallop): Its flesh is plump and tasty, suitable for consumption. With rapid growth, it is an excellent species for aquaculture. In northern China's coastal areas, large-scale mariculture of this species has been established, yielding significant economic benefits.
