In the first three quarters of 2025, South Korea imported 39,923 tonnes of frozen mackerel, marking a 54% increase compared to the same period last year. The total import value reached USD 106.92 million, up 83%, reflecting strong market demand. Despite rising prices, with the average import unit price increasing from USD 2.26/kg in 2024 to USD 2.68/kg in 2025, imports remain robust. Norway remains the largest supplier, exporting 31,766 tonnes to South Korea, accounting for nearly 80% of total imports. However, its market share declined compared to last year, indicating a diversification of sources. Exports from China, the UK, and the Netherlands have grown significantly, with China exporting 3,936 tonnes, the UK entering the market with 1,820 tonnes, and the Netherlands reaching 1,383 tonnes. Additionally, emerging suppliers including Taiwan, France, the Faroe Islands, Chile, Argentina, and India have begun contributing small volumes.

Industry experts note that the simultaneous rise in import volumes and prices reflects structural changes in the supply chain. Diversifying suppliers and establishing long-term contracts will be key to stabilizing the market. Wholesale prices of Norwegian Atlantic mackerel in South Korea reached around KRW 155,000 per 20 kg, up significantly compared to last year. Overall, South Korea's frozen mackerel market shows strong demand and a clear trend toward supply diversification, presenting new opportunities and challenges for the industry.
