MSC: The global demand for sustainable seafood is growing steadily, with the sectors severely affected by the pandemic showing a strong recovery.
The latest statistics from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) show that the global market demand for sustainable seafood is steadily increasing, with MSC certified fisheries, supply chain institutions, and the volume of most sustainably certified products continuing to grow.
According to the MSC annual report, the number of MSC-certified fisheries worldwide grew from 449 to 539 between April 2021 and March 2022, and 15% of the global Marine fishing industry was MSC-certified, up 1% from last year. The number of companies supplying and selling MSC-certified seafood increased 5% to 5,985 and operate in more than 46,000 locations worldwide.
The report also noted that the strong recovery continued in sectors hit by the global coronavirus pandemic, with sales of MSC-certified label products up 39%. In addition, more retail restaurant brands are meeting their sourcing commitments for sustainable seafood, with sales of MSC-labelled tuna products up 24% year over year and certified pet food up nearly 50% to 95,000 tonnes.
