From the initial fishing suspension of 2 months to the current fishing suspension of 4 months, the biomass density of fishery resources in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea increased significantly. But after a month at sea, overfishing can lead to a gradual depletion of resources. Changes in fishing stocks have led to deeper thinking

How do we face this gift of the sea?

Qingdao DAILY/GUANHAI NEWS, SEP. 1 -- BIDDING FAREWELL TO THE FOUR-MONTH SUMMER FISHING MORATORIUM, 3,453 VESSELS IN Qingdao LEFT FOR THE SEA TODAY.

The ocean, for fishermen to bring employment and increase income, for society to provide a wealth of Marine aquatic products. But over the years, the decline of Marine fishery resources caused by overfishing has become a big problem in our offshore fishing industry. Therefore, China has taken the measures represented by the fishing ban in summer season, which has significantly increased the amount of offshore fishery resources. However, once fishing starts, large-scale and high-intensity fishing will easily make the Marine fishery resources return to a relatively depleted state. In THE FACE OF THIS CIRCULAR dilemma, researchers in Qingdao PUT forward the countermeasure of "MARKEtization of Marine fishery catchable resources" in order to promote the recovery of Marine fishery resources to a healthy state.

More than a month fishing ban, hairtail fish and other fish form a fishing flood again

Many people will find that the hairtail, which is not often seen and caught in Qingdao waters in previous years, has become common since 2017. During the summer holiday, sitting on a sightseeing fishing boat, do not have to be too far from the land, it is very easy to catch a few large hairtail. Tourists often enjoy the pleasure of Marine tourism, while lamenting: the coastal waters of Qingdao have become more fish.

Why do hairtail fish suddenly appear in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea, forming a fishing flood? Wu Qiang, an associate researcher at the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute, gave the answer. "Hairtail fish usually return from the Yellow Sea to the Bohai Sea from April to June to spawn and reproduce, especially in May. "In 2017, China moved up the fishing ban for the summer season by one month, starting from May 1, which ensures the normal reproduction and migration of migratory fish and allows the recovery of hairtail resources in the Yellow and Bohai Seas." He said.

Suspending fishing in summer is an important measure to conserve fishery resources and protect Marine ecological environment. In 1995, China OFFICIALLY IMPLEMENTED THE SUMMER FISHING BAN system, starting from July 1 to September 1. Later, a month was added, and the start date became June 1. Now another month has been added, making it May 1. This has given respite to most fishing species in the Yellow and Bohai Seas, which will not be "rounded up" by fishing boats during the breeding season in May.

It's not just hairtail fish. Since 2017, Spanish mackerel, small yellow croaker, silver pompano, Chinese prawn and swimming crab with three verrua have all been breeding and growing rapidly during the summer fishing moratorium in the Yellow and Bohai Seas. Wu Qiang and other researchers found that there are about 40 kinds of migratory fish from the Yellow Sea to return to the Bohai Sea to spawn and reproduce, thanks to the summer fishing ban measures, these fish can reproduce and migrate normally. According to statistics, since 2017, the biomass density of fishery resources in the Bohai Sea has increased by 3-7 times at the end of summer vacation compared with that in the early summer vacation, while that in the Yellow Sea has increased by 2-5 times. One more month of fishing suspension has achieved remarkable results.
