What Is The Argentina Shortfin Squid?

Argentine Shortfin Squid are short-lived, fast growing species that are highly susceptible to environmental changes. It is primarily found around the slope of the continental shelf in the southwest Atlantic Ocean. It can be found in the open ocean (epipelagic to mesopelagic), from the surface to about 800m depth off the coasts of Brazil, Argentina and the Falkland Islands.

Jigger catch

Catch vessel use powerful spotlights to attract the squid to the surface and catch them in fishing gear comprising pots containing a fluorescent lure with multiple hooks. The squid are caught one by one and hoisted alive and intact to the deck.

As such there is little impact on the bottom habitat and its species, although sometimes the nets do come into contact with the bottom. Mid-water trawls generally aim to catch large schools of a single fish so the incidental bycatch tends to be low.

Under 100g and 100-150g sea frozen Illex Argentinus, also called dirty squid, are used as squid bait for sea fishing.

200-300g, 150-200g are usually for human consumption, such as BBQ.

400-600g frozen Illex argentinus is the largest size in illex squid series, usually purchased by processing factory.
