At present, there are 47 species of 10 genera in the family Loliginidae, mainly living in offshore and continental shelf waters. Life spans are generally less than three years, and for most species in the Indo-Western Pacific, less than a year.

In the world cephalopod fishery, squid production is far higher than other subjects, and of the 47 species of squid, these three are the most famous: Loligo vulgaris (European squid), Loligo forbesii (Veined squid), Doryteuthis pealeii (Longfin inshore squid). They're all in the Atlantic ocean.

There are about 12 species of squid in Chinese waters, among which 5 species are the most economically valuable, such as Chinese tail squid, swordtail squid, Duchenne tail squid, Japanese small squid and musketeer squid.

Chinese Mitre squid (Photololigo) chinensis, also known as Chinese gun squid, Hong Kong squid, Taiwan lock tube Squid, long cylinder Squid, rocket squid, etc. It is mainly distributed in penghu Islands, south Fujian sea, around Hainan Island, beibu Gulf of Guangxi, etc., and its peak is from April to June.

The swordtip squid (Photololigo) edulis is also known as the Uroteuthis (Photololigo) edulis. The largest distribution in the Taiwan Strait, Japan, the Philippines and other waters also visible; June to August is the peak period, during the night can be seen on the sea crowded fishing lights. Uroteuthis (Photololigo) Duvaucelii, also known as big Island lock tube, Indian Squid. Mainly in the Indian Ocean, the South China Sea, and increasingly the East China Sea. The common lm length was 15 cm and the longest was 33 cm (males, FAO data). Catches in Chinese waters have been increasing since the 1980s.

The small Japanese squid Loliolus (Nipponololigo) japonica, also known as cuttlefish larvae, pen tube, ziyu, etc., is mainly distributed in the Yellow Sea, but also found in the South China Sea. There are subcircular pigment spots of varying size on the body surface and dense purple spots on the back of the eyes. The common lm was 10 cm and the longest was 15 cm (gender was not reported, FAO data). Although the body size is small, but the quantity is very large, and the meat is tender, delicious taste, is an important fishing object in the Yellow Sea.
Some areas in Shandong, such as Qingdao, are also called "sea rabbits" because of their fast escape speed.

The squid Loliolus (Nipponololigo) Beka, commonly known as squid, ghost arch, water rabbit, sea rabbit, etc. Mainly distributed in the southern waters of the Japanese islands, can be seen along the Coast of China, but the Bohai Sea is the most abundant. Although yield is much, but commodity value is lower, often catch make fish bait.

Sepioteuthis Lessoniana is commonly known as Bigfin Reef squid. Widely distributed in the Indo-Western Pacific waters, not only New Zealand, Australia's northern coast can be seen, the Mediterranean Sea is often caught, so extensive that has produced two shapes!
