MAHI MAHI - Coryphaena hippurus - dolphinfish

Characteristic features:

Dorsal fin very long and high with its origin on nape

Adults with a large bony crest on head

Body very compressed

Caudal fin deeply forked

Colour:

Bright blue-green above, sides silvery with a golden sheen scattered with numerous black spots; dorsal and anal fin dark.

Size:

Up to 200 cm TL.

Distribution:

Circumglobal, in tropical and subtropical waters.

Habitat:

Epipelagic, often under floating objects, from the surface to 85 m depth.

Biology:

Feeds primarily on a wide range of fishes, but also crustaceans and squid.
