Basic Information
Round scad is a pelagic, commercially available fish found throughout the northwest Pacific Ocean off the coast of China. It has a wide distribution range and a streamlined body with a bluish-gray back and a silvery-white belly. It has a short lifespan and grows rapidly.
With the widespread adoption of light-purse seine technology in the 1970s, catches surged. In 1989, catches surpassed those of hairtail to become the main catch in the East China Sea. The fishing season runs from September to June. Freshly caught round scad can be frozen for preservation or cooked in brine to make "fish rice."
Nutritional Value
Round scad is also a fish rich in amino acids and unsaturated fatty acids. In the 1980s, to promote public health, the Japanese government mandated that elementary and middle school students consume a round scad for lunch every day and a bag of milk for breakfast.
