Affected by Typhoon Wipha, China's tilapia industry suffered a double blow from supply and demand imbalance and natural disasters. Prices at production sites hit a record low, the export market was sluggish, and the industry faced severe challenges.

Typhoon caused the price of tilapia to hit a new low, and farmers concentrated on selling tilapia
After Typhoon Wipha landed on July 20, the price of tilapia at the production site fell. In the 30th week, the price of 500-800g tilapia purchased processing plants fell by 0.20 yuan/kg week-on-week, hitting a historical low; prices in Hainan, Guangxi and other places also fell by 0.2-0.4 yuan/kg.
In order to avoid typhoon risks, farmers concentrated on selling tilapia, causing the actual transaction price to fall below the psychological barrier of 7 yuan/kg, and the lowest was 6.96 yuan/kg.
The export market continues to be sluggish, and companies have accumulated inventory
The sluggish export market has made the already difficult industry even worse. The head of a large processing plant in Hainan said that US orders have been interrupted for many months and the cold storage is seriously overstocked; the executives of Guangdong export companies said that the industry is in its "darkest moment" and the purchase of raw materials has almost stagnated.
Companies adjust strategies, stocking volume may be reduced in the next quarter
Faced with the crisis, processing companies digested inventory through delivery duty paid (DDP) and other schemes. However, the continued cost inversion and strict environmental regulations have prompted practitioners to adjust their production strategies.
The China Aquatic Products Circulation and Processing Association warned that the stocking volume is expected to decrease by 30% in the next quarter, which may lead to a supply crunch at the end of the year.
