Argentina's inland squid fishing season ended on April 22nd. Both the total catch and the pace of fishing operations ranked among the top in recent years. As of May 7th, the latest unloading data shows a cumulative catch of 186,992.3 tons, fully demonstrating the overall strong performance of the squid fishing industry this season. The catch was concentrated in January and February, during which the squid resources in the fishing grounds were abundant, and the fishing profits of the vessels were far higher than the same period in recent years. The abundant resources in the early period helped to quickly boost the total annual catch; the overall output remained high in March, but resources gradually declined after April, with a particularly significant decline after the opening of waters north of 44 degrees south latitude.

This fishing season's trend conforms to the usual pattern of Argentine squid fishing: several months of concentrated high yields, followed by a sharp decline in resource stocks before the season abruptly ends. In terms of port distribution, Patagonia remains the core area for squid fishing operations. Port Madeline remains the largest unloading port with 81,485.5 tons unloaded; Port Mar del Plata follows with 50,929.4 tons; and Port de Céado ranks third with 47,614.6 tons. The differences in unloading volumes among ports reflect both the high activity level of fishing in Patagonian waters and the region's central role in seasonal logistics and operational management.
Although this season's catch is lower than the 17-year peak record of 2025 (203,956 tons unloaded at the end of 2025), data for 2026 still confirms that Argentine squid in the Southwest Atlantic is entering another high-yield cycle. With only three months of actual operation, the total catch remains at a historically high level. Fishing profits decline significantly towards the end of the season, especially in waters north of 44 degrees south latitude, where fishing vessels generally report difficulty in finding dense schools of squid. The dispersed fishing areas, declining catch per vessel, and low resource density prompted the Argentine National Institute for Fisheries Development to issue professional advice, leading to an early fishing moratorium to protect the squid species' biological reproductive cycle. Despite a cooling resource situation in the final weeks of the fishing season, the overall squid catch in 2026 is expected to be positive, again highlighting the highly volatile nature of this species' fishery resources.
Squid resources exhibit a rapid decline in stock after a peak season, forcing continuous dynamic adjustments to fisheries management policies and fishing vessel operation strategies. Early forecasts for the 2026 fishing season suggested a potential breakthrough of the 2025 record, setting a new historical high. The 44°S latitude line ultimately became a crucial dividing line between the northern and southern squid population trends. The significant differences in resource distribution and stock between the north and south necessitate in-depth biological research to accurately identify the core reasons for this divergence.
