To protect marine fishery resources and promote ecological balance, China's 2025 fishing moratorium officially began. According to the 2025 Marine Fishing Moratorium Implementation Plan issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, this year's moratorium will continue to cover China's four major sea areas-the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, East China Sea, and South China Sea-starting from May 1 at 12:00 PM and ending on September 16 at 12:00 PM, lasting four and a half months.
Expanded Scope and Strengthened Enforcement
This year's moratorium policy has been further optimized, expanding the restricted fishing zones and increasing supervision over illegal fishing. In addition to traditional fishing methods such as trawling and purse seining, new restrictions have been imposed on some auxiliary fishing vessels to ensure marine life is fully protected during critical breeding periods. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, in collaboration with the China Coast Guard and maritime authorities, has launched special enforcement operations, utilizing satellite monitoring, drone patrols, and other technological measures to crack down on illegal fishing.
Scientific Conservation for Sustainable Fisheries
Experts from the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences stated that after nearly 30 years of the moratorium system, the populations of some commercial fish species have shown significant recovery. In 2025, China will further expand artificial reef construction and stock enhancement efforts, planning to release over 30 billion juvenile fish to help restore marine ecosystems.
