On June 25, 2025, the "Su Hai 1" self-propelled enclosed salmon farming workboat, developed by China State Shipbuilding Corporation, was officially delivered in Nansha, Guangzhou. This colossal vessel with a displacement of 132,000 tons is equipped with 15 independent breeding tanks and has a total water volume of 83,000 cubic meters, equivalent to the volume of 33 standard swimming pools. This vessel adopts a goat-style production feature. Its maximum speed at sea can reach 18 kilometers per hour. It can navigate autonomously between harsh environments and safe sea areas, achieving an intelligent aquaculture model that can avoid typhoons and track suitable water temperatures. That is to say, taking the fish to live in different suitable sea areas, when the environment changes, the location of the fish farm will also change along with the ship, ensuring that the fish farm always maintains an environment that the fish love.

Compared with traditional cage farming, "Su Hai No.1" has pioneered an octagonal farming cabin structure. Through a precisely controlled water flow system, it forms a ring, simulating the natural habitat of fish schools. The fully automatic feeding system equipped on the ship can monitor the feeding status of fish in real time. From the five elements of aquaculture: water, oxygen, feed, light and pollution, for fish species sensitive to light, the ratio of blue to green light sources can be adjusted, and for fish species with high water flow requirements, the inlet water pressure can be adjusted to customize the water flow speed, etc. Each adjustment can precisely meet the needs of the fish population.

This "mobile ranch at sea" is scheduled to be officially put into operation by the end of this year, with the first phase to be deployed to the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea for operation. Through precise temperature-controlled closed farming, the quality and yield of salmon can be enhanced, and pollution risks such as red tides can be completely avoided. This technology may change the global salmon trade pattern. China is expected to achieve a qualitative improvement in the self-sufficiency rate of salmon in a few years. While increasing production capacity, it can also provide a stable supply of salmon to the market, and at the same time ensure the impact of market price fluctuations on salmon.
