The main features are several longitudinal dark stripes on the side abdomen of the body. Skipjack has eight to nine small fins in its dorsal fin; Anal fin strips 14 to 15, small fin 8 to 9. The caudal fin is crescent shaped, with 4 to 7 longitudinal stripes on the side of the body. The back of the body is blue-brown, the belly is silver white, and the fins are light gray. The larger one is more than 1 meter long, and the general body length is 400 to 500 mm.
Dawn, diurnal fish, appearing in the surface to 260 meters of water depth during the day, floating at night, often eat sardines, bamboo horn and other fish and crustaceans.
Bonito fish like to follow whales and sharks to do collective swimming, first to eat the larger food in the water, the rest for the whale shark to devour. Whale sharks also shade bonito, and it's a symbiotic relationship. The areas where skipjack are found are often accompanied by seabirds that hunt for food above the shoals.
