Reasons for the Decline in Mackerel Spawning

According to SeafoodMedia, the environmental organization Blue Marine Foundation (BMF) has issued a warning regarding the lack of consensus in North Atlantic fisheries, asserting that Atlantic mackerel (*Scomber scombrus*) stocks are under severe threat from overfishing. The BMF notes that the biomass of Atlantic mackerel has declined by more than 10 million tonnes over the past decade. In the BMF's view, this decline is driven by persistent overfishing by coastal nations; catch limits-whether agreed upon collectively or set unilaterally-have repeatedly exceeded levels recommended by scientific management bodies. The BMF argues that the absence of a unified framework agreement among the relevant parties is exacerbating pressure on the fish population.

The organization warns that if quota allocations continue to exceed levels recommended by biologists, the fishery faces a dual collapse-both operational and ecological-within the North Atlantic ecosystem.
