A new milestone has been reached in the history of China's fishery development: Hainan has achieved large-scale tuna farming for the first time! Good news recently came from a farming base in the Li'an waters of Lingshui, Hainan Province: After nearly 30 months of meticulous care, the first batch of yellowfin tuna juveniles released have grown into 50-kilogram "big fish," totaling over 4,000 individuals that have reached commercial standards. This not only represents a major breakthrough in my country's deep-sea aquaculture technology, but also provides a high-quality supply of domestically produced tuna to the domestic market, reducing reliance on imports.

From Research to Reality: A Breakthrough Eight Years in the Making

The Tuna Aquaculture Demonstration Base in Lingshui Li Autonomous County, Hainan Province, is China's first innovative project focused solely on deep-sea tuna. Located 3.6 kilometers from the coastline in tropical waters, the base boasts excellent water quality, a warm climate, and proximity to natural fish concentrations in the central and northern South China Sea, making it an ideal location for tuna farming. A team from the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences initiated experimental work in 2016. Through tireless efforts, they captured and domesticated wild fry for the first time in 2022, successfully achieving a key breakthrough in cage aquaculture technology.

In August 2023, carefully selected wild yellowfin tuna juveniles from the South China Sea were introduced into the base's gravity-fed cages (each 90 meters in circumference). These juveniles have now grown to giants exceeding one meter in length, marking a new milestone in my country's artificial aquaculture efforts. The project team leader revealed that this achievement is the result of years of accumulated experience, including early explorations in trapping techniques and aquaculture, laying a solid foundation for industrialization.

Technological Challenges: The Key to Overcoming Aquaculture Challenges

Tuna farming is no easy task. Initially, it faced numerous daunting challenges: the difficulty of catching wild juveniles, low survival rates during transportation (juveniles are fragile), and stringent disease prevention and control requirements. Furthermore, yellowfin tuna is extremely picky about their feed; only fresh, high-quality food can ensure their growth. Poor-quality feed directly affects the taste and nutritional value of the fish.

By collaborating with research institutes, the team overcame these bottlenecks. For example, the base uses a specially formulated high-protein feed to ensure the tuna is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, surpassing wild fish in quality. Technically, the team achieved a leap forward in artificial breeding: a single trial produced nearly 200,000 eggs, with a hatch rate of 83.1%, paving a new path for China's independent cultivation of tuna seedlings. The resulting farmed tuna is more delicious and flavorful, meeting internationally advanced standards.

Industry Chain Blueprint: Accelerating the Layout from Aquaculture to Table

To promote the comprehensive development of the tuna industry, Hainan is accelerating the construction of the Lingshui Deep-Sea Fishery Complex. The plan includes a smart cage capable of withstanding a Category 17 typhoon. Expected to be operational in 2025, it will support a larger aquaculture volume (approximately 60,000 cubic meters), boosting production capacity to new heights.

Regarding seed resources, Lingshui plans to establish a county-level aquatic seed base, attract international talent, establish a research center, and focus on importing high-quality species such as Pacific bluefin tuna to address seed shortages. Logistics and processing are equally efficient: the Wenluo Logistics Industrial Park is equipped with ultra-low temperature refrigeration and modern production lines, ensuring that Lingshui tuna reaches dining tables nationwide within 24 hours, maintaining exceptional freshness. This breakthrough not only improves the standardization of aquaculture technology but also provides Chinese consumers with more choices and reduces reliance on imported tuna.

In the future, Hainan's tuna industry is entering a fast lane, which will drive the upgrading of the fishery economy.
