Loligo: Low Initial Stock Levels, Yet Strong Final Harvest

Pre-season stock assessments for the Falkland Islands *Loligo* squid indicated an initial biomass of 17,508 tonnes, with a lower confidence limit of 14,049 tonnes. As this figure exceeded the 10,000-tonne biological safety threshold set by the Department of Natural Resources, the authority authorized the official opening of the fishing season. Nevertheless, the initial stock level for this season ranked third-lowest over the past two decades; only the 2008 and 2024 seasons began with lower biomass.
James Wilson, Director of Natural Resources, noted that low initial stock levels do not necessarily imply a poor final harvest. He cited the 2008 season as an example: despite a similarly low starting biomass, the total annual catch ultimately surpassed the twenty-year average. Market data from the port of Vigo, Spain, corroborated this, showing a total *Loligo* production of 42,000 tonnes for the first season of 2026. After a series of dismal seasons, this production figure has reignited optimism across the industry.
Migration Patterns and Dynamic Monitoring
Director Wilson explained that *Loligo* squid undergo several large-scale migrations during the season, which can significantly boost total production. In contrast, the initial biomass in 2024 was so low that fishing operations were not authorized to begin at all. He also mentioned that unforeseen events during the season are difficult to predict, so the Department of Natural Resources continuously monitors stock levels throughout the fishing period: "Looking at the long term, we must recognize that *Loligo* squid have a short lifespan and are highly sensitive to environmental conditions, leading to significant annual fluctuations in total stock; accurately predicting stock size for the coming year is essentially impossible. The Department's core mission is to ensure the sustainable exploitation of fishery resources. For the *Loligo* industry, this means ensuring that sufficient adult squid remain in the waters to spawn and reproduce after the season ends, thereby preserving stock for the following year's fishing season."
