Boosted by strong demand in the United States, potential port strikes, and the impact of tariffs on foreign manufactured goods, Maersk predicts a 5%-7% growth in global container market volume this year.
Attacks by Houthi forces on ships in the Red Sea and the "resilient" demand from U.S. companies will continue to stimulate container shipping volumes.
By sales, the United States is Maersk's largest delivery market. In October 2024, Maersk raised its full-year profit forecast and updated its 2024 container volume outlook, with clients including Walmart, Target, Asos, and Nike.
The National Retail Federation stated that due to potential dockworker strikes on the U.S. East Coast in January and President-elect Donald Trump's plans to increase tariffs, inbound freight volumes in November and December will hit record levels.
Maersk expects the turmoil in the Red Sea region to continue until 2025.
