On August 14, 2025, Jesús Barrientos, Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Peru, announced at a meeting with representatives of artisanal fishermen from Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna that, in view of the phased results achieved in Operation Giant Squid III, Peru will officially resume giant squid (Dosidicus gigas) fishing on August 25, with a tentative total catch of 50,000 tons.
According to the Peruvian Marine Institute (IMARPE), the last few fishing vessels still operating in southern waters will return soon. Once this information is processed, the final additional quota for small-scale fishers in the new phase will be determined to ensure responsible biomass management.

Barrientos emphasized that this fishing campaign will be conducted with a high degree of responsibility, with all decisions carefully considered. The goal is to protect the livelihoods of fishermen while preventing any impact on the availability of giant squid stocks by 2026.
